The Aztec coins originate from the Aztec civilization. According to legend, in order to avoid being slaughtered, the Aztecs used these coins to bribe the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés.
However, Cortés accepted the gift but broke his promise and greedily destroyed the Aztec civilization, and thus these gold coins were cursed.
