The Dwarves dug caves and built halls here, forming an underground city. And the Kingdom under the Mountain was founded in 1999 of the Third Age.
The Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain also had friendly relations with the humans living in Lake - town. There were numerous trade exchanges between them regarding goods, trinkets, and weapons, and the entire region maintained peace and prosperity for many years.
However, in 2770 of the Third Age, Smaug, the "dragon," heard that the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain possessed great wealth and came to loot the Lonely Mountain, killing many Dwarves.
Thrór and his son Thráin II escaped through a secret back door with a few followers and drifted eastward until they reached the hills of Dunland.
In 2941 of the Third Age, twelve Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield, along with Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins, came to Lake - town to recapture the Lonely Mountain. Afterward, under the first ray of moonlight on Durin's Day, Thorin used the key to open the door of the secret passage.
